Win a Three-Night Stay at the Multi-Award-Winning Punakaiki Forest Retreat

Hidden in a vast West Coast forest of Nikau palms and tree ferns, this 36 square-metre cabin occupies a clearing close to the wild coastline of the Tasman Sea.

Over nearly a decade, the remote Punakaiki site revealed itself slowly — its forest rhythms, native flora and abundant fauna becoming deeply familiar.

Architect James Warren of Upoko Architects designed the dwelling with the intention to capture the adventure and rugged spirit of West Coast living.

At 6x6m, the cabin is hidden within the canopy. Its dark exterior mirrors the bark of the trees, while timber-lined interiors carry the warmth of the forest inside.

Inside, space is considered and refined, feeling much larger than its compact footprint. A double-height living area and expansive glazing create a sense of volume that belies its scale. Sliding glass doors open the space to the forest, letting tree ferns and birdlife become an inherent part of daily life.

Deep kitchen benches invite conversation, mezzanine sleeping spaces evoke the feeling of resting among the canopy, and a central wood burner gathers people as if around the campfire.

There’s a certain luxury here that has nothing to do with size and everything to do with being completely immersed in one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary landscapes.
