Work of Art by MDesign

At MDesign, Geoff Mackintosh creates furniture with a strong sense of purpose. From his Whanganui studio, he combines traditional craftsmanship with a practical, thoughtful approach shaped by years of experience.

MDesign specialises in bespoke furniture and interior pieces for residential and commercial projects. From statement pieces to more understated designs, each project is carefully tuned to its environment and the people within.

Geoff’s work is found in many notable New Zealand spaces. Recently, MDesign created custom benches for the newly reopened Sarjeant Gallery; Tasmanian blackwood and soft leather upholstery invite visitors to pause and observe the surrounding art.

These pieces reflect MDesign’s wider philosophy — a focus on craftsmanship, longevity, and thoughtful design. Whether producing large-scale commercial fit-outs or one-off pieces, attention to detail remains central to every project.

Growing up on a rural New Zealand farm, Geoff held an early appreciation for natural materials and practical making. This background influences the way he approaches design today, with an emphasis on sustainability, durability, and honest craftsmanship.

“Over the past two decades, my work has evolved through curiosity, problem-solving, and attention to detail,” says Geoff. “While we use modern technologies, the foundation is traditional craftsmanship, creating pieces that last.”
