This approach is exemplified in Heirloom, the Bathroom of the Year 2026, part of an extensive renovation by interior designer Shelley Ferguson in Auckland’s Herne Bay. This project reflects SCE Stone & Design’s approach to every project—working closely with architects, designers and homeowners to source, craft and install natural stone that complements each individual design.
Once belonging to the client’s mother, the Heirloom home holds deep personal meaning for its owners. The renovation pared the cedar house back to its bones and prepared it for the future, yet every decision was directed by a desire to honour what came before.
Here, the bathrooms became spaces of retreat rather other than mere utility. Shelley imagined environments that nurture emotional connection, inviting stillness and reflection.
That vision began with a rose quartz crystal shown to Shelley by the client — a symbol of warmth, love and connection. The conversation led towards natural stone, prompting a search for a material that could embody those same qualities.
In collaboration with SCE Stone & Design, Shelley discovered Yangtze Peach marble. Its tones move through dusty rose, muted peach and soft grey, offering the warmth she envisioned without tipping into ornament.
Acquiring materials of this calibre sits at the heart of SCE Stone & Design’s practice. Through longstanding relationships with international quarries and suppliers, the company helps designers find natural stones that define a project.
A floating wall, clad in leathered Yangtze Peach marble, conceals the shower and toilet, allowing the stone to become a sculptural element within the architecture. During fabrication, the slabs were precisely book-matched to reveal a delicate sequence of heart-shaped forms where the veining meets behind the mirror. This hidden detail reinforces the emotional story knitted through the home.
