Seven New Zealand makers come together for Making Matters, a new exhibition at Depot Artspace exploring material, process and the enduring value of making by hand.
Opening at Depot Artspace in Devonport, Auckland, this October, Making Matters brings together seven skilled New Zealand makers under the banner of Platform 26. Rebecca Asquith, Susannah Bridges, Kennedy Brown, Edward Fuller, Rupert Herring, Roger Kelly and Leon Kipa each bring distinct practical and aesthetic sensibilities to a collection of newly created three-dimensional works.
At the heart of the exhibition is an exploration of what it means to make. Through material manipulation, sustainability, light, sound and play, the works consider ideas spanning temptation and intrigue to fragility, curiosity and whakapapa. Rather than prescribing a singular reading, the exhibition invites visitors to interpret each work through their own experiences, creating a dialogue between maker and viewer.
That sense of connection extends to the makers themselves. Platform 26 is grounded in the belief that maintaining relationships with like-minded practitioners and the wider creative community is central to creative practice. Following the group’s inaugural exhibition, Making Matters offers another platform for sharing the concepts, processes and thinking behind each maker’s work.
The exhibition runs from 10 October to 21 November 2026 at Depot Artspace, 28 Clarence Street, Devonport. An opening event will be held on 10 October from 2–4pm, followed by a How We Make event on 7 November and a Why We Make floor talk on 21 November.
