Innovation in Coloured Concrete: Peter Fell and Interior of the Year

As the Interior of the Year awards get underway, Peter Fell reflects on three decades supporting New Zealand’s architecture and design industry, and the growing role of coloured concrete in shaping contemporary interiors.

Tell us about your history supporting the architecture and design industry in New Zealand.

For more than 30 years, PeterFell has worked alongside architects, designers, landscape architects and builders across New Zealand to help bring colour, texture and innovation into concrete. Over that time, we have been lucky enough to see our products used across some incredible residential, commercial and landscape projects throughout the country.

For us, the architecture and design industry in New Zealand is constantly surprising us with its innovation and creativity. We love seeing the different ways coloured concrete gets used and how designers continue to push materiality, texture and colour in new directions.

Why did you want to support the Interior of the Year Awards, and what does it mean for your brand to get behind this programme?

Interior of the Year feels like a natural fit for PeterFell because it celebrates thoughtful design and the people behind it. Supporting the programme is about more than sponsorship for us, it is about backing creativity and supporting the wider design industry in New Zealand.

At Two Sheds by RTA Studio – the Readers' Choice Home of the Year 2026 – coloured concrete by PeterFell becomes the project's unifying thread.

What are some of the recent highlights from the Peter Fell team in terms of what you’ve been delivering and achieving?

The past year has been incredibly exciting for the PeterFell team. We have seen strong demand for coloured and decorative concrete as more designers embrace coloured concrete as a feature material.
A big focus for us has also been storytelling and content creation, showcasing projects, collaborating with architects and designers, and continuing to invest into our website, photography and video content.

Are there any recent milestones or news from Peter Fell that you’d like the industry to know about?

A recent milestone for PeterFell has been our continued focus on sustainability and transparency within the construction industry. Our Bayferrox™ coloured oxides now carry internationally recognised Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), helping architects and designers make more informed sustainable material choices.

We have also achieved Declare labels across our coloured oxide range, giving greater transparency around product ingredients and environmental impact.

For us, it is important that we are not only helping create beautiful architectural spaces, but also supporting the future of sustainable design and construction.
On Waiheke Island, Herbst Architects’ Onetangi Cliff House, the Coastal Home of the Year 2025, used concrete as both protection and expression, with its tone and texture carefully tuned to the harsh coastal environment.

What are you most excited about for the year ahead?

For the year ahead, we are excited to continue growing our presence within the architecture and design community and building more meaningful collaborations and partnerships.

We are seeing a real shift towards materials that feel authentic, tactile and enduring, and we think coloured concrete has a huge role to play in that conversation.
