Faced with a flat grassy site on the outskirts of Wānaka, PAC Studio and Steven Lloyd created a house around a series of courtyards that create a private sort of landscape.

Two gables and a chisel roof define different spaces in this home, while the placement of buildings creates courtyard spaces, all inside a neat rectangular frame. Inside, the views are carefully moderated so you see sky and trees and mountains rather than surrounding houses.

“It’s a masterclass in detail and colour,” says HOME editor Simon Farrell-Green. The design has an intriguing, late-modernist feel with graduated weatherboards reaching up to a razor-thin roof edge, with accents of mustard and green against timber.

“The devil is in the detail,” says Aaron Paterson of PAC Studio.  “Some parts of the house may appear simple but are frustratingly hard to achieve.”

This carefully crafted and clever use of colour made this project a clear winner for the Best Colour and Detail award thanks to Dulux.
