Everyday objects seldom seek our attention. Soap, more than most, is made to vanish. With the OBA Soap collection, Danish designer Matias Moellenbach reimagines this essential, shaping it into a sculptural form that sits between product design, ritual and art.
Each piece appears, at first, as a small geometric sculpture. A translucent sphere of glycerin-based soap rests lightly on a satin-finished resin cube, forming a composition that explores weight, transparency and colour. The interplay between glossy soap and matte base is intended to remain visible rather than hidden beside the basin.
Moellenbach sees soap as a chance to elevate the most ordinary moments. The collection echoes a wider movement in contemporary design, where even the smallest rituals are reimagined through craftsmanship and material exploration.
Form follows function as closely as aesthetics. To address the common issue of bar soap softening in pooled water, Moellenbach designed the sphere and cube to meet at a minimal contact point, allowing the soap to dry quickly. A hidden drainage hole in the resin base prevents water from collecting, ensuring the object is as considered in use as it is in appearance.
The resin base brings visual weight and a chance to explore colour and translucency. The naturally derived soap takes on tones shaped by its ingredients. Together, these elements create compositions that feel closer to collectible design than to ordinary bathroom accessories.
The inaugural collection offers five fragrances, each uniting scent, colour and mood in a considered sensory experience. Terralis blends cedarwood, vetiver and sage for earthy warmth. Rosevale softens the palette with lavender, rose and white musk. Papaya brings tropical notes of sweet orange and vanilla. Aloe Vera offers crisp freshness with cucumber and citrus. Citralis delivers an invigorating mix of lemon, mint and bergamot. Each fragrance is matched with its own colour pairing, reinforcing the connection between scent, material and form.
