St Marys Bay stands as one of Auckland’s most storied neighbourhoods, where century-old villas, mature pōhutukawa and glimpses of the Waitematā Harbour define the streetscape. Within this enduring context, Pillars introduces a contemporary approach to apartment living.
Designed by Jasmax and developed by Precinct, the collection of 16 residences is guided by the principles of timeless design. Rather than maximising density, Pillars explores how apartment living can offer the spatial generosity, privacy and connection often associated with a standalone home.
This philosophy shapes the architecture. The building does not imitate its neighbours, but responds through proportion, materiality and rhythm. Fluted concrete columns, inspired by the classical pillar, introduce depth and shadow to the façade, while a restrained palette gives the building a quiet permanence. Set into the hillside, the architecture settles naturally into the established character of St Marys Bay.
Spanning the full depth of the building, each home draws natural daylight from varying directions, encourages cross ventilation and frames changing harbour views. Careful orientation layered thresholds and generous separation create a sense of openness while preserving privacy.
Each residence is planned to balance spaces for gathering with places of retreat. Bedrooms become calm, light filled sanctuaries, while flexible media rooms or studies, generous storage and discreet service areas respond to the evolving rhythms of contemporary life.
The outdoor spaces are equally considered. Broad terraces and landscaped courtyards extend the living environment, allowing harbour, sky and established planting to become part of daily life. Whether entertaining or unwinding, residents remain connected to the changing seasons.
Inside, kitchens are the social heart, with generous islands, integrated sculleries, wine storage and built-in bars designed for effortless entertaining. Living spaces open to expansive terraces or private gardens, inviting daily life to flow between indoors and out.
Materiality reinforces this sense of permanence. Concrete provides weight and durability, while natural timber, stone and crafted detailing introduce warmth and tactility. Richness is found not in excess, but in texture, proportion and the shifting play of light across enduring materials.
An equally thoughtful environmental agenda underpins the architecture. Pillars is targeting a 6 Homestar (v5) rating, reflecting a commitment to healthier, more efficient homes through high-performance design. Passive solar principles, natural ventilation, energy-efficient systems and carefully selected materials work together to reduce environmental impact and enhance comfort.
Anchored in the spirit of St Marys Bay, Pillars demonstrates how contemporary apartment living can capture the qualities of a private home: generous space, thoughtful design, connection to design and a lasting sense of belonging.
