Architects, not Architecture Returns to Auckland

Julie Stout and Richard Naish will take the stage at Fisher & Paykel’s new Penrose headquarters for an evening that turns attention away from their buildings and toward the experiences that have shaped their work.
The international series Architects, not Architecture returns to Auckland on 15 October, gathering two influential voices in New Zealand architecture: Julie Stout of Mitchell Stout Dodd and Richard Naish, founder of RTA Studio.

During this talk, architects are invited to speak, but not about their own projects. Instead, the spotlight moves to the people behind the work—their formative experiences, influences, and the moments that have shaped their paths.

Since its founding in 2015, Architects, not Architecture has travelled to more than 25 countries across four continents, offering audiences a rare glimpse into the personal journeys of architecture’s leading practitioners.

For this Auckland edition, Julie and Richard will each reflect on their own journeys through architecture, tracing the ideas and experiences that have shaped their practices.

Julie is an architect, urbanist and Distinguished Fellow of the NZIA. She co-founded Mitchell and Stout Architects with the late David Mitchell in 1989 and chairs Urban Auckland, advocating for better urban outcomes in Tāmaki Makaurau. In 2021, she received the NZIA Gold Medal for her contribution to architecture and urbanism.

Richard founded RTA Studio in 1999, establishing a practice grounded in the people, landscapes and culture of Aotearoa, with environmental design at its core. RTA Studio has received more than 100 NZIA awards and numerous international accolades. In 2026, Richard received the NZIA Gold Medal.

The talks take place in the auditorium of Fisher & Paykel Appliances’ new global headquarters in Penrose, one of New Zealand’s largest mass-timber buildings. Designed by RTA Studio under Richard’s direction and opened this year, the building places one of the evening’s speakers within his own architectural context.

Architects, not Architecture Auckland takes place on Thursday 15 October 2026 at Fisher & Paykel Appliances’ global headquarters in Penrose, Auckland. The event is presented with the support of Fisher & Paykel and Autex.
