A Global Lens at Aotearoa Art Fair

International artists feature strongly at this year’s Aotearoa Art Fair, with galleries presenting a range of global voices alongside local talent. Among them are Hwang Seontae and Atong Atem, whose light-based and photographic works transform the image into immersive, contemplative encounters.

South Korean artist Hwang Seontae creates luminous ‘light box’ works constructed from layered, etched glass, and concealed lighting, depicting calm, ordered interiors.

Here, sunlight filters through imagined windows, casting sharp shadows across unoccupied rooms and inviting contemplation. Suspended between absence and anticipation, these serene spaces feel theatrical and deeply meditative.

At the booth of Pontone Gallery, Hwang Seontae’s New Zealand debut includes five new pieces created for Aotearoa Art Fair — luminous scenes that draw viewers into a moment of stillness.

South Sudanese artist and writer Atong Atem, who currently resides in Melbourne, explores portraiture as both an intimate exchange and a framework for storytelling.

Working with richly staged photographic scenes, Atong examines how images shape the ways we see and position one another in the world. Her portraiture is playful and incisive, inviting closer reflection on identity, visibility and representation
