From a compact concrete home near Queenstown to a collection of monolithic structures in Arrowtown, the first two finalists in Home of the Year 2019 showcase how architecture can be inspired by dramatic landscapes. The third finalist in Home of the Year 2019 shares this same ethos.
Perched on a typically hilly Wellington site, the third finalist is an intriguing design by Spacecraft Architects. The house is arranged in an ‘X’ over two levels with the ground floor sitting perpendicular to the top. Bedrooms are upstairs, living areas are down. A simple material palette completes a budget-friendly but thoughtful little house for a young family.
Judges Simon Farrell-Green, Lance and Nicola Herbst (winners in 2016 and 2018), and Paraguay’s Gloria Cabral took a tour through the X-Marks house while visiting the Home of the Year shortlist. Simon says “the judges thought the house was an example of what can be done with minimal budget and a lot of creativity.”
