Enduring beauty

The Modi Design space in Christchurch is a multifaceted environment — part studio, part showroom — designed to spark creativity and subtly present possibilities to visitors.

It’s also where Modi Design’s ethos comes to life. At its centre is a kitchen: the heart of the office for staff, and a starting point for clients — a place to explore materials, touch surfaces, and begin shaping their own spaces.

Blending custom elements with considered materials, the design features an island in Dekton, paired with a timber and metal linear pendant, custom-made by Modi for the space. Behind, the cabinetry is crafted from Bestwood Evoake engineered oak veneer in a crown cut. Stained in a soft grey tone, it offers both richness and restraint.

“We chose Evoake because we wanted something timeless and inspiring to show clients,” says designer Georgia Chappell.

“We’re big believers in doing something once and doing it right, and Evoake is both practical and visually appealing. We also liked the consistently even grain — we knew the stain would be uniform across every panel.”

From a distance, the kitchen reads as sculptural and bold, but up close it’s all in the detail — the interplay of texture, the subtle red, green, and black undertones in the stone, and the way Evoake celebrates the natural variation of the grain.

It’s a space of enduring simplicity and refined details that perfectly distills Modi’s design language.

Evoake veneer is available in New Zealand from Prime Panels.
