Photographer Masano Kawana returns to New Zealand

Japanese photographer Masano Kawana has returned to New Zealand after 26 years abroad — a homecoming driven by his enduring fascination with light, space, and landscape.

Born in Japan, Masano first lived here from 1985 to 1998, formative years that shaped his visual sensibilities. Drawn to the clarity of New Zealand’s wide open skies and distinct light, he has chosen Auckland once again as his base.

Across decades spent living in Singapore and working on assignment worldwide, Masano built a distinguished career photographing luxury hotels and private residences. His work includes imagery for globally recognised hospitality brands such as GHM Hotels, as well as luxury homes throughout Singapore and Asia. He has also contributed to several celebrated architectural titles, including Sustainable Luxury and The Sustainable Asian House, both authored by Paul McGillick.

Known for a clean, modernist eye that balances architecture, interiors, and landscape, Masano’s return to New Zealand marks both a personal and creative renewal — a chance to once again explore the light and land that have long informed his work.
