Guided by the conviction that art belongs to everyone, a new contemporary art gallery in Christchurch has quickly established itself as a must-visit destination. It’s a place not just to discover new work but to explore how art can live beautifully in everyday spaces.
After years of managing a gallery in the capital, Ashleigh Thompson recently returned to Christchurch to establish a space of her own. Her vision: to create a platform for New Zealand artists and makers, and to welcome a wide audience into the city’s centre.
“Opening in a character building on High Street felt like the right place at the right time,” says Ashleigh. “It was a chance to contribute to the city’s evolving arts and design scene and to help re-establish the area as a creative destination.”
The gallery’s roster reads as a considered cross-section of contemporary New Zealand practice — including Michele Bryant, whose prints distil streetscapes into finely observed aerial compositions, and Shane Morris, whose textile wall-hangings in feather and woven matting draw on deeply embedded cultural narratives. Each work reflects the gallery’s commitment to artists grounded in the distinct stories of Aotearoa.
Alongside a dynamic calendar of exhibitions and events, Ashleigh also offers in-home art consultations completing the circle and bringing creativity and narrative into the spaces we inhabit.
